As someone who has watched soccer (yes I'm an american) for over 20 years now, not really following any one team in particular but tuning into every world cup and watching real madrid and fc barcelona matches and highlights every now and then, I watched the meteoric rise of messi, seeing him in compilations on 360p youtube videos in the late 2000's and early 2010's, dribbling past scores of defenders, never flopping, perfect touches, class behavior on and off the court, he has always struck me as being not only one of the hardest working most inspirational football players of all time, but one of the kindest, most empathetic, not prone to the shenanigans that other players like neymar and countless other womanizing flopping horrible football players there were out there (too many to name).
